Product information

Description

The PENTAX WG-90 is a compact action-sports camera built for demanding outdoor use. Its durable, airtight body provides waterproof performance to 14 meters for up to two hours, shock resistance to drops from 1.6 meters, dustproofing, freeze resistance to -10°C and crush resistance up to 100 kgf. The camera pairs rugged construction with a back-illuminated 16.0 effective megapixel CMOS sensor, Full HD video at up to 120 fps and a 2.7" LCD for versatile stills and motion capture.

Advantages

The WG-90 combines strong mechanical protection and environmental sealing with high-sensitivity imaging and advanced processing. Its backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and imaging engine deliver low-noise performance up to ISO 6400 and super-resolution processing for detailed images. A 5x optical zoom (equivalent to 28–140mm) plus Intelligent Zoom expansion and electronic image stabilization support a wide range of framing and action shooting. The camera also includes user-friendly modes such as Handheld Night Snap and interval shooting for fixed-point time-lapse.

Suitable for

  • Underwater snorkeling and shallow diving (down to 14 m)
  • Outdoor sports and action photography where shock and dust resistance are required
  • Cold-weather shooting down to -10°C
  • Time-lapse and fixed-point interval photography
  • High-frame-rate Full HD video recording at up to 120 fps

Key specifications

  • Effective resolution: approx. 16.0 megapixels (back-illuminated CMOS sensor)
  • Maximum video resolution: 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) up to 120 fps
  • Lens: 5–25 mm (equivalent to approx. 28–140 mm in 35 mm format), 5x optical zoom; Intelligent Zoom extension available
  • Display: 2.7" built-in LCD
  • Environmental protection: waterproof to 14 m for up to 2 hours (IPX8/JIS Class 8), shockproof to 1.6 m, dustproof (IP6X/JIS Class 6), freeze-proof to -10°C, crushproof to 100 kgf
  • Image stabilization: electronic image stabilization
  • Storage: compatible with SD, SDHC, SDXC memory cards
  • Weight: approx. 0.194 kg
  • Color: Black

How to use

Turn the camera on and use the mode dial or on-screen menu to select stills, video or interval shooting. For underwater use, ensure all covers and battery/memory doors are fully closed and undamaged before submersion; observe the 14 m / 2-hour limit for waterproof operation. Use optical zoom to frame subjects and enable Intelligent Zoom if extra reach is required. For low-light handheld shots, select Handheld Night Snap to let the camera combine multiple exposures into one steady image. Record full-motion sequences using Full HD settings and choose 120 fps for slow-motion playback.

Usage recommendations

Inspect seals and housing for debris or damage before exposing the camera to water or extreme conditions. Use high-quality SD/SDHC/SDXC cards rated for video recording to ensure reliable Full HD and high-frame-rate capture. When shooting underwater or in cold temperatures, allow the camera to acclimate and dry thoroughly after use to maintain long-term performance.

Maximum frame rate: This is the maximum frame rate, also known as frame frequency and frames per second (FPS). It is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. The term applies equally well to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and motion capture systems. Frame rate is most often expressed in frames per second (FPS) and is also expressed in progressive scan monitors as hertz (Hz).

Design

International Protection (IP) code: The IP code classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against the intrusion (including body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The digits (characteristic numerals) indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the tables below. Where there is no protection rating with regard to one of the criteria, the digit is replaced with the letter X. an electrical socket rated IP22 is protected against insertion of fingers and will not be damaged or become unsafe during a specified test in which it is exposed to vertically or nearly vertically dripping water. Another example is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, one of the first cellular phones to be IP-rated; it is rated at IP58 and marketed as "dust resistant" and can be "immersed in 1.5 meter of freshwater for up to 30 minutes".

Aperture range (F-F): Aperture range of the device's optics, expressed in f-stops.
3.5 - 5.5
Focal length range: Measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light. For an optical system in air, it is the distance over which initially collimated rays are brought to a focus. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length; that is, it bends the rays more strongly, bringing them to a focus in a shorter distance. For an optical system in air, the effective focal length (f and f′) gives the distance from the front and rear principal planes (H and H′) to the corresponding focal points (F and F′).

28 mm
Maximum focal length (35mm film equiv): The maximum 35mm equivalent focal length, which is a measure that indicates the angle of view of a particular combination of a camera lens and film or sensor size. The term is useful because most photographers experienced with interchangeable lenses are most familiar with the 35mm film format.
