Stepper motor driver Rosfix A4988 RepRap module – breakout board for bipolar stepper motors
Rosfix A4988 RepRap stepper motor driver module is a compact breakout board designed to drive bipolar stepper motors with microstep capability. The module provides standard step and direction inputs, an enable pin, sleep and reset controls, and microstep selection pins to configure full, half, quarter, eighth, and sixteenth step modes. It is compatible with common RepRap electronics and microcontroller platforms and is intended for applications requiring accurate position control and adjustable current limiting.
The Rosfix A4988 module offers configurable microstepping for smoother motion and higher positioning resolution without additional logic. Integrated current limiting and thermal protection help prevent motor and driver damage under overload conditions. The compact breakout format simplifies integration into existing RepRap or custom control boards and allows direct connection to stepper motors and controller signals. The board exposes accessible pins for sleep, reset, enable and microstep selection, enabling flexible control strategies.
Integrate the Rosfix A4988 module between your control board and a bipolar stepper motor, connecting VMOT and GND to the motor supply and the motor coils to the motor output pins. Connect STEP and DIR to your microcontroller or motion controller outputs and use ENABLE, SLEEP and RESET as needed for power management and fault handling. Adjust the onboard current-limiting potentiometer to set the appropriate motor current and configure the MS1–MS3 pins to select the desired microstepping mode. Observe correct wiring for motor supply decoupling capacitors and maintain adequate cooling during extended operation.
Use a suitable motor supply voltage and add a decoupling capacitor close to the VMOT and GND pins. Set the current limit before running the motor and monitor driver temperature; provide additional heat sinking or airflow when driving higher currents or during continuous use. Avoid switching power connections while the motor is connected to prevent damage, and follow safe wiring practices to ensure reliable operation.
