Product information

Description

The Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary is an ultra-wide zoom lens for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras that combines a constant F2.8 aperture with a compact, lightweight design. At approximately 450 g and 100.6 mm in length, the lens is designed for travel, landscape, wedding and run-and-gun filmmaking where portability and wide coverage are required. Its internal zoom mechanism keeps the lens length and balance stable throughout the zoom range, making it suitable for handheld use and gimbals.

Advantages

The lens delivers high image quality in a compact body thanks to two large-diameter aspherical elements and five FLD-type glass elements that reduce lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration. A constant F2.8 aperture provides shallow depth-of-field control and a nine-blade rounded diaphragm produces smooth, circular bokeh. Super Multi-Layer Coating suppresses flare and ghosting for good contrast in backlit scenes. Fast, quiet autofocus controlled by a stepping motor supports stills and video work, while Thermally Stable Composite materials help maintain performance across temperature changes.

Suitable for

  • Landscape photography
  • Architectural and interior photography
  • Wedding and event photography
  • Travel and street photography
  • Handheld and gimbal-based video, vlogging and filmmaking

Key specifications

  • Focal length: 16–28 mm
  • Maximum aperture: f/2.8 (constant)
  • Minimum aperture: f/22
  • Lens construction: 16 elements in 11 groups
  • Closest focusing distance: 0.25 m
  • Filter thread: 72 mm (front)
  • Diaphragm blades: 9 (rounded)
  • Weight: approx. 0.45 kg
  • Length: approx. 100.6 mm
  • Mount: Sony E

How to use

Attach the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary to a compatible Sony E-mount camera body and set the camera to the desired exposure mode. Use wider focal lengths (16–20 mm) for expansive landscapes and interiors, and longer settings near 28 mm to reduce perspective distortion or to isolate subjects. The constant f/2.8 aperture is useful for low-light shooting and creative background separation. Use the internal zoom ring to change focal length without altering the lens length or balance—beneficial when stabilising on a gimbal or shooting handheld. Use the autofocus for normal operation; switch to manual focus when precise control is required for video or focus stacking.

Usage recommendations

The built-in front filter thread supports 72 mm neutral density and polarising filters—use these for long exposures, motion blur effects, or controlling reflections in landscape and architectural shooting. For paired kit versatility, consider combining this ultra-wide lens with a 28–70 mm f/2.8 lens to cover ultra-wide through short telephoto ranges with a consistent maximum aperture.

Focal length range: Measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light. For an optical system in air, it is the distance over which initially collimated rays are brought to a focus. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length; that is, it bends the rays more strongly, bringing them to a focus in a shorter distance. For an optical system in air, the effective focal length (f and f′) gives the distance from the front and rear principal planes (H and H′) to the corresponding focal points (F and F′).
