Spectrum Filaments 81410 is a 1 kg roll of multicolour Silk Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament for FDM 3D printers. The filament is marketed under the colour name "Solar Flare" and is suitable for printers that accept 1.75 mm filament diameter. It comes packaged in a box and is intended for general-purpose modelling and decorative prints.
The Silk PLA formulation offers a smooth, slightly glossy finish that enhances visual appeal on finished parts. Being PLA-based, the filament is easy to print with, requires relatively low extrusion temperatures compared to engineering plastics, and produces minimal warping on small to medium-sized prints. The multicolour/Solar Flare effect provides gradient or variegated colour transitions without changing filament spools.
Silk PLA is optimized for visual quality rather than mechanical strength or high-temperature resistance. It may not be suitable for functional parts that require high load-bearing capacity, significant impact resistance, or exposure to elevated temperatures. For large flat prints, colour transitions may be less predictable and surface sheen can vary depending on print orientation and settings.
Load the 1.75 mm filament into an FDM 3D printer configured for PLA. Typical extrusion temperatures for Silk PLA are similar to standard PLA; start with the printer manufacturer's recommended PLA temperature range (commonly around 190–220 °C) and adjust as needed for optimal flow and finish. Use a heated bed if available (around 40–60 °C) and ensure good first-layer adhesion. Slow to moderate print speeds improve surface quality and help preserve the silk sheen. Store unused filament in a dry place or sealed with desiccant to avoid moisture absorption.
For best visual results, print at moderate speeds with fine layer heights (e.g., 0.1–0.2 mm), enable proper cooling after the first few layers, and perform test prints to dial in temperature and retraction settings to minimise stringing while preserving the silk finish.
