Server chassis Supermicro SuperChassis 836BA-R920B Rack Black
The Supermicro SuperChassis 836BA-R920B Rack Black is a 2U rackmount server chassis designed for enterprise and data centre environments. It includes a 920W redundant 80 PLUS Platinum (94%) power supply, supports up to sixteen hot-swap 3.5" SAS drive bays with SES2 dual-channel backplane and optional two rear 2.5" hot-swap SAS bays, and offers Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) connectivity. The chassis supports EATX and ATX motherboards and provides front-accessible hot-swap drive capacity and rear options for additional 2.5" drives.
The chassis provides high-availability power through its redundant 920W 80 PLUS Platinum power supplies and a hot-swap drive design for fast drive replacement without system downtime. Its dual-channel SES2 backplane with Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) simplifies connection to SAS controllers, while multiple 8 cm hot-swap and rear-exhaust 4-pin PWM fans enable controlled airflow and thermal management. The unit's rack-optimised 2U form factor and support for both 3.5" and optional 2.5" drives allow flexible storage configurations.
Install the chassis into a compatible 19" rack cabinet occupying 2U of rack space. Mount an EATX or ATX motherboard and connect power to the 920W redundant supply. Populate the front 3.5" hot-swap bays with SAS drives and connect them via the Mini-SAS (SFF-8087) interface to your SAS controller or HBA. If required, fit the optional rear 2.5" hot-swap drives or the slim DVD-ROM. Configure drive arrays or RAID at the controller level and verify fan operation and airflow before placing the system into production.
Use SAS-rated enterprise drives for optimal reliability, ensure rack airflow conforms to the chassis intake and exhaust directions, and maintain redundant power modules to avoid single points of failure. Periodically verify firmware for backplane, fans and power supplies, and plan hot-swap operations following your storage controller's procedures.
