HOYA Variable Density II is a 62 mm variable neutral density (ND) filter with an adjustable range from 1.5 to 9 f-stops (ND3–400). The filter uses a redesigned rotatable frame with a convenient knob for easier operation and reduced risk of vignetting on wide-angle lenses by providing a wider rotatable ring compared to the fixed frame. Its frame construction also allows the use of a lens cap one size larger than the filter (for example, a 77 mm cap on a 77 mm filter variant may accept an 82 mm cap where applicable).

How to use

Mount the Hoya Variable Density II on the lens thread (62 mm). Rotate the outer knob to adjust the filter density until the desired exposure is achieved. For still photography, use the filter to lower shutter speed for motion blur without changing aperture. For video, set shutter speed appropriate to the frame rate (commonly double the frame rate) and then increase filter density to avoid overexposure. Check for vignetting at extreme wide-angle settings and, if necessary, slightly reduce density or use the rotatable frame position that minimizes edge shading.

Usage recommendations
