Variable density camera filter Hoya Variable Density II 67 mm
HOYA Variable Density II is a density-adjustable camera filter with an ND range from 1.5 to 9 f-stops (ND3–400). The design includes a newly developed rotatable frame with a convenient knob that improves handling and allows finer control of light reduction. The filter is intended to replace multiple solid ND filters by providing a continuously variable density for stills and video shooting.
The Variable Density II enables precise exposure control without changing aperture, allowing longer shutter speeds for motion blur effects or wider apertures in bright conditions to reduce depth of field. Its rotatable frame is wider than the fixed frame to minimize vignetting on wide-angle lenses, and the frame construction permits using a lens cap one size larger than the filter (for example, a 77 mm filter can accept an 82 mm cap). The ND range from 1.5 to 9 stops covers many lighting situations for both photography and video.
Attach the filter to the lens by screwing the 67 mm thread onto the lens filter mount. Rotate the outer frame using the knob to adjust the density until the desired exposure or creative effect is achieved. For still photography, reduce shutter speed to create motion blur while keeping aperture and ISO settings as needed. For video, set shutter speed to about double the frame rate and rotate the filter to lower light intake until the exposure is correct. Check for vignetting at the widest focal lengths and, if necessary, adjust composition or use a narrower density setting.
Use the HOYA Variable Density II when you need flexible control over exposure without changing lenses or stopping down. For best results on wide-angle lenses, verify that the wider rotatable frame does not introduce vignetting at extreme focal lengths. When shooting video, monitor shutter speed relative to frame rate to preserve natural motion rendering.
