Macro lens Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for MILC/SLR, 12/10 elements/groups, 67 mm filter
The Venus Optics Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO is a dedicated macro lens for MILC and SLR cameras that provides up to 2:1 magnification while covering full-frame sensors. Engineered with an apochromatic optical design, the lens controls chromatic aberration in both in-focus and out-of-focus areas for improved color fidelity at extreme magnifications. Its optical construction consists of 12 elements in 10 groups, and the lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture, a 67 mm filter thread, a closest focusing distance of approximately 0.247 m, and a compact physical size comparable to conventional 100 mm macro lenses. The Laowa 100mm can focus from 2:1 magnification to infinity, making it suitable for high-detail close-up work as well as portrait and telephoto use.
The APO design reduces longitudinal chromatic aberration so that color fringing is minimized at both the plane of focus and in the foreground/background blur. Extended 2:1 magnification lets photographers capture finer detail than standard 1:1 macro lenses without a larger physical footprint. Compatibility with MILC and SLR systems, a moderate f/2.8 aperture and the ability to focus to infinity provide versatility: the lens performs well for extreme close-ups and can double as a sharp short-telephoto for portrait or product work. The Canon EF version includes an aperture control motor and CPU for camera-side aperture control, EXIF recording and focus-assist indicators.
Mount the lens to a compatible MILC or SLR body and set the camera to manual or appropriate exposure mode. For macro work, use a stable support such as a tripod and move the camera or subject slowly to compose at the desired magnification; the lens focuses from 2:1 magnification to infinity. When working at high magnifications, use manual focus adjustments and consider focus stacking for increased depth of field. On Canon EF bodies the lens aperture can be controlled from the camera; on other mounts aperture behavior may depend on the specific version. Use mirror lockup, remote release or electronic front curtain shutter where available to reduce vibration at high magnification.
For best results in macro photography, combine the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO with controlled lighting (diffused flash or continuous LED) and a stable support. Use smaller apertures and focus stacking to increase apparent depth of field when capturing subjects at higher magnifications. For portraits, stop down moderately from f/2.8 to improve edge-to-edge sharpness while retaining subject separation.
