ESAB OK 48.00 D4.0 welding electrodes are rutile-coated, low-hydrogen MMA consumables with a 4.0 mm diameter supplied in a 6.2 kg pack. Intended for general-purpose joining and repair of unalloyed and low-alloy steels, these electrodes deliver a stable arc, predictable bead formation and straightforward slag removal to support routine construction, maintenance and fabrication tasks.
These electrodes combine a rutile-based coating with low-hydrogen characteristics to provide easy arc striking, smooth bead appearance and reduced spatter. The coating formulation facilitates slag detachment and consistent deposition, while the wire core and flux balance offer acceptable mechanical properties for standard structural and repair applications. The 4.0 mm size is a common choice for medium-thickness plate and structural sections.
These electrodes are formulated for general-purpose use on unalloyed and low-alloy steels; they are not intended for welding high-alloy stainless steels, nickel alloys or other specialized metals. For critical applications requiring strictly controlled low hydrogen levels, preheating/post-weld heat treatment or weld procedures qualified to specific standards may be necessary beyond routine use of a low-hydrogen rutile electrode.
Select an appropriate welding current for a 4.0 mm electrode and prepare the joint by removing rust, oil and loose scale. Use recommended polarity and amperage ranges for MMA welding with a low-hydrogen rutile electrode, strike an arc and maintain a consistent travel speed to achieve even deposition and a good bead profile. Allow welds to cool under controlled conditions where required by the base material and application to avoid excessive hydrogen uptake or distortion.
Store electrodes in a dry environment and, if necessary, bake according to manufacturer guidelines before use. For routine maintenance and construction welding on carbon and low-alloy steels, use recommended current ranges for 4.0 mm electrodes and maintain steady travel speed to optimize bead appearance and minimize spatter.
