Metalweld MONEL welding electrode for cast iron, diameter 2.5 mm, is designed for manual arc welding of cast-iron components. The electrode has a nickel-based MONEL composition formulated to bond to a variety of gray and ductile cast irons, enabling repairs, rebuilds and joints on cast housings, fittings and machinery parts. It is supplied in a 2.5 mm core diameter suited to general repair work and spot welding where controlled heat input and consistent fusion are required.

How to use

Prepare the component by removing dirt, oil and loose oxide from the weld area; grind or wire-brush to sound metal. For best results, condition the edge of the crack and establish a clean groove if rebuilding material is required. Select welding current appropriate for 2.5 mm electrodes and the base material thickness, and strike the arc with a short arc length to promote fusion. Deposit weld metal in short runs or overlapping weaves to control heat input and minimize distortion. Allow the weld to cool slowly where possible; in larger repairs consider preheating the cast part according to material thickness and alloy to reduce thermal shock.

Usage recommendations

Use appropriate personal protective equipment including welding helmet, gloves and clothing. Where base material composition is uncertain or where critical mechanical properties are required, perform trial welds and mechanical tests. For large or highly restrained castings consider controlled preheat and post-weld heat treatment per accepted cast-iron welding practices.
