The Vallejo Pigment Set - Rust & Corrosion contains four pigment tones and a step-by-step guide by Chema Cabrero to reproduce realistic rust and corrosion effects on scale models and dioramas. It replaces the earlier version and is supplied as four 35 ml pots of pigment paste in complementary shades for layered weathering.
This set provides a range of pigments specifically selected for rust and iron oxidation effects, allowing gradual buildup from fresh to aged corrosion. The included guide explains techniques for application and blending to achieve realistic textures and color transitions. Pigment paste consistency makes them easy to work with and suitable for mixing, fixing or dry-brushing to create different weathering results.
Because these are concentrated pigments, they are not intended as a stand-alone opaque paint for full coverage; they work best as weathering layers over base colours or primers. They also require appropriate fixatives or binders if you need permanent adhesion or if the finished piece will be handled frequently.
Apply pigments over a prepared base coat or primer according to the guide by Chema Cabrero. Use brushes, sponges or cotton swabs to place, blend and feather pigments. Fix pigments with an appropriate fixer or a diluted acrylic medium if a permanent finish is required. For washes or streaks, mix pigments with a suitable solvent or binder and apply with a brush, then blend or remove excess where needed.
Start with lighter applications and build layers gradually, following the step-by-step guide. Test mixtures and fixation methods on a scrap surface before applying to the final model to control colour intensity and texture.
